Drone, helicopter championships held in Central Florida

by DeVore Design, December 5, 2015

From drones to helicopters there is plenty of action going up in the air. Be carefu, you blink and you miss it at the MultiGP Championships.

“It’s a big championship we basically race all over the us over the last year or so and this is where all the fastest guys get together and go out it,” said Shaun Taylor, a drone operator who told News 6 why he loves flying drones. “I’ve always wanted to fly but I’ll never be able to do it. So this is as close as it can get. When I put the goggles on it’s like you’re really flying.  It’s just like you’re in Star Wars, it’s like you’re flying a pod racer.”

Participants are part of the premier First Person View racing club. During the race, drone pilots wear goggles that connect to the camera on the drones, giving them the feeling of actually being in flight.

As many as one million drones could be sold this holiday season, according to an unofficial estimate by the Federal Aviation Administration.

“Well this is becoming real popular because it’s an out of body experience. You’re racing around doing things you would never do if you were on board. You wouldn’t even be able to handle making turns as fast as we do” said Chris Thomas, founder of MultiGP.

And with more drones going up this holiday season, he hopes new drone pilots use these type of events to learn how to operate drones safely.

“Finding a local community, finding a local club to train is really the way to do it,” said Thomas.

There will be events and races going up through Saturday afternoon.
