Here’s the latest on SeaWorld’s newest ride opening next year

It looks like SeaWorld Orlando’s newest water ride opening next year has hit a milestone in construction.

A new notice of commencement permit was filed on Aug. 10 by the marine theme park for “Attraction 2018 Ride Foundation,” which appears to be for the future Infinity Falls water ride. Infinity Falls is a river rapids-style ride that will include a 40-foot drop from a lift – the tallest river ride drop in the world.

According to a previous story, Infinity Falls follows the story of explorers in an Amazon-like rainforest who find the majesty of the rivers and surrounding life and then decide to build a village there and invite guests to learn about conservation efforts and, for those brave enough, dare the river rapids.

The contractor on the permit is PCL Construction Services, which has been tied to many other tourism projects. Disney’s Skyline gondola system, the Disney Springs transformation from Downtown Disney and Orlando International Airport’s $2.15 billion south terminal are all projects in which the company has had a hand.

The attraction will provide the struggling SeaWorld something new with which to welcome guests next year — the same year Walt Disney World will debut the new Toy Story land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Universal will open the new Fast & Furious: Supercharged ride.

SeaWorld has been trying to overcome a wave of trouble both on the financial and perception fronts. The company posted a disappointing mid-year earnings report.

New rides can help to boost attendance at theme parks and draw more visitors to Orlando, which has a $60 billion tourism and travel industry that serves 68 million tourists annually.
