Lake: Get rid of discarded tires to reduce threat of mosquito-borne illnesses

by DeVore Design, July 18, 2016

Old tires stacking up may seem harmless, but they can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

With mosquito season upon us, county officials are reminding residents to take steps to reduce the threat of mosquito-borne illnesses.

The way to help, Lake County Mosquito and Aquatic Plant Management officials said, is to dispose of tires and drain standing water from other problem items and properly store cans, buckets, bowls, animal dishes, flower pots and certain plants such as bromeliads.

Mosquito-borne diseases found in Florida include West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis, St. Louis encephalitis and Zika. To report mosquito activity, call 352-343-9682.

As for tires, Lake County Solid Waste allows residents to dispose of five per day, free of charge, at six drop-off locations listed. For hours of operation, go to bit.ly/29vYdPJ or call 352-343-3776.
